By train:

By car:
Carbondale is right off the Interstate 57, U.S. Route 51 and Illinois Route 13.
From S. Louis (nearest city with international airport):
There are 6 flights daily between Williamson County Regional Airport in Marion (10 minute drive from Carbondale) and S. Louis. See Capeair for more information.
The Bart shuttle bus is a bus that provides door to door service from the airport to Carbondale.
